What is Fishbone?  What is work?  Description of use in garments with examples!

📌 Saeed Saeed,

The  fishbone diagram  is also called the Ishikawa diagram or the cause & effect diagram.

👉 This is a tool  that can be used to find the  root cause  of the problem.

👉 Because the diagram looks like a fish skeleton, it is called a fishbone.

📌 What is the function of a fishbone?

1.  Helps to find the possible  root cause of a problem.

2.  Helps reduce and prevent defects.

3. Problems can be analyzed by involving everyone through teamwork.

4. Plays an important role in Continuous Improvement (CI) or Continuous Development.

5. The problem is not just seen, but gives the opportunity to take preventive measures.

📌 Use of fishbone in garments

In garment factories, fishbone diagrams are usually drawn through  4M or 6M categories.

6M Category:

1. Man (Man/Operator) – Operator skills, carelessness, lack of training.

2. Machine – Machine settings, maintenance problems, broken parts.

3. Material (raw material) –  quality problems of fabrics, defects in accessories.

4. Method – wrong process, wrong operation sequence.

5. Measurement – Incorrect size, scale/template problem.

Mother Nature (Environment) – Light, ventilation, humidity, temperature.

📌 Garments with examples

Example 1:  Having a Skip Stitch Defect in Stitches

Analyzing the fishbone—

• → operator not feeding properly, untrained.

● → needle broken, tension setting is incorrect.

Material → yarn quality is bad.

• Incorrect → operation sequence, correct feed guide not used.

Measurement → template/pattern is incorrect.

Mother Nature → The light is low, so the operator can not see the work properly.

Example 2:  Collar Shading Problem on Shirt

Proper procedure was  not followed in cutting → fabric.

● The temperature of the → pressing machine is uneven.

Shade of cloth is different, roll mixed.

Method → shade separation not maintained.

Measurement → Error in fabric inspection.

Mother Nature → store is high humidity, fabrics are changing color.

In a nutshell

Fishbone is a tool that is used for quality problem solving  in garments. It finds the  root cause and points to the solution.
